Buttons Be Gone

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! For the holiday weekend, I worked on another vintage outfit. I got the original from the same vintage street fair in Fargo, ND last summer that Vintage ReVamp came from (see the last photo for the ‘before pic’). The coolest thing about this dress is that the storeowner knew the woman that made it! I can tell that not only was the dress handmade, but the sash was also hand embroidered. This was a pretty easy project, where I only made a couple of adjustments. A few things that aged the dress were of course, it’s long puffy sleeves with the yellowing buttons, its length, and its little turtle neck. At first, I intended to keep the original neckline, because I am a fan of short turtle necks. I was going to shorten the sleeves and fit them to my arm. Once I cut the sleeves off however, I decided I liked their unfitted shape and how their look seemed to mirror that of the skirt. The turtle neck just really didn’t look right with the new sleeves and it was preventing the dress from evolving into something from this era, so it had to be eliminated :) Finally, I took the skirt up about three inches. Fun fact about this one is that I didn’t use a sewing machine to alter it at all; I did it all by hand. I actually did it all by hand in the airport after my flight got delayed several hours.

I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving, spent time appreciating all we have to be thankful for, spent time with your dogs, and maybe even spent time doing some arts and crafts! :) Until next time!
